Alphabet Toys is a book with two purposes:
First, it is a child's first book with laminated pages that can be repeatedly cleaned. The binding allows the pages to be removed as drill cards or to be framed, without glass, as a monogram or initials. The comb binding allows pages to lie flat with each page.
Second, it is an Art book of illuminated illustration. It displays technique of past times when an illustrator didn't have a computer and all of the work was free-brush: no masking, no straight edges, no drawn edges, or pen work. It is technique that is perhaps lost forever.
The alphabet was illuminated by the artist in the 1950's and never brought to market. One attempt was made in the '60s by silkscreen reproduction, but it didn't work. Now, with computer graphics, the original paintings are presented in book form as described above.
